Five-Banded Tiphiid Wasps

Five-banded Tiphiid Wasps live in meadows fields and lawns.  They are found throughout the United Stated and Canada.

The adults drink nectar.  The female lays her eggs on May beetle larvae in the soil.

She deposits one egg on each host.  The larvae penetrate the hosts and feed on nonessential tissues.  Later they eat essential organs which kills the host.
